Setup guide

Set up NetixVPN

You connect with the official WireGuard app. It’s free, open source, and takes a couple of minutes to set up.

First: add a device

  1. 1

    Open your plan

Log in to the client area and open your NetixVPN service.

  2. 2

    Add a device

Type a name such as “My phone” and click Add device.

  3. 3

    Pick a location

Choose one from the list. You’ll get a QR code for phones and a file for computers; follow the steps for your device below. Each location has its own code and file.

Windows

WireGuard for Windows
  1. 1Download WireGuard for Windows and install it.
  2. 2In your client area, click Download for the location you want.
  3. 3Open WireGuard, click Import tunnel(s) from file and pick the file.
  4. 4Click Activate.

Stay protected: click Edit and tick Block untunneled traffic (kill-switch) so nothing leaves your PC outside the VPN.

macOS

WireGuard on the Mac App Store
  1. 1Install WireGuard from the Mac App Store.
  2. 2In your client area, click Download for the location you want.
  3. 3Click the WireGuard icon in the menu bar, choose Import tunnel(s) from file, pick the file, and allow the VPN configuration when macOS asks.
  4. 4Click Activate.

Stay protected: edit the tunnel and turn on On-Demand for Wi-Fi and Ethernet, so your Mac reconnects by itself.

iPhone and iPad

WireGuard on the App Store
  1. 1Install WireGuard from the App Store.
  2. 2Open your client area on a computer or another screen so the QR code for your location shows.
  3. 3In WireGuard, tap +, then Create from QR code, and scan it. Give the tunnel a name and allow the VPN configuration.
  4. 4Switch the tunnel on.
  5. 5Only have your phone? Tap Download in the client area instead, then in WireGuard tap + and Create from file or archive.

Stay protected: edit the tunnel and turn on On-Demand Activation, so it reconnects whenever you’re online.

Android

WireGuard on Google Play
  1. 1Install WireGuard from Google Play.
  2. 2Open your client area on a computer or another screen so the QR code for your location shows.
  3. 3In WireGuard, tap +, then Scan from QR code, and scan it. Give the tunnel a name.
  4. 4Switch the tunnel on and accept the connection request.
  5. 5Only have your phone? Tap Download in the client area instead, then in WireGuard tap + and Import from file or archive.

Stay protected: in your phone’s settings, open the VPN page (on most phones under Network & internet), tap the cog next to WireGuard, and turn on Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN.

Linux

Other systems
  1. 1Install WireGuard. On Ubuntu or Debian: sudo apt install wireguard
  2. 2Download the file for your location, for example uk-lon-1.conf, and copy it into place: sudo install -m 600 uk-lon-1.conf /etc/wireguard/
  3. 3Connect with sudo wg-quick up uk-lon-1 and disconnect with sudo wg-quick down uk-lon-1.
  4. 4To connect at every start-up: sudo systemctl enable --now wg-quick@uk-lon-1

Stay protected: if wg-quick says resolvconf: command not found, install it with sudo apt install openresolv and connect again.

Turn on the kill switch

With the kill switch on, nothing leaves your device outside the VPN, even for a moment while it reconnects. The tips above show where to find it on each device.

  • Block untunneled traffic on Windows
  • Always-on VPN on Android
  • On-demand connections on Apple devices

If something isn’t working

It connects, but nothing loads

Check your device’s date and time are right, then try another location. On Windows, close any other VPN software, which can get in the way.

It works at home but not on another network

WireGuard uses UDP, and a few networks, such as some offices, hotels and schools, block it. There’s nothing wrong with your setup; it will work again on another network.

“Device limit reached”

Remove a device you no longer use from your client area. Its slot is free straight away.

I lost my phone or laptop

Remove it from your client area. It stops connecting within seconds, and you can add your new device in its place.

Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us your device and what you see.
